Hello, good evening! I’m really satisfied with the quality of the music we had at Loronix across the last days.

The idea is to slow down a little bit the release of new music and keep a strong pace on links reactivation. I think this new approach is really good, as the feedback received has been positive with no exceptions.

Anyway, today is Saturday and we need some relaxation, after all, Saturday is the day of Samba at Loronix.
Let’s see.

This is Paulo Freire – Orgao + Batucada = Samba (1978), for Copacabana, featuring the Brazilian organist Paulo Freire, probably unknown to many friends. Paulo Freire delivers infectious Samba grooves on top of a Samba repertoire full of very popular songs. I must admit this album is my first experience with Paulo Freire, which is some kind of late Andre Penazzi, very active on recordings throughout the 70′s. This album works according to what is proposed to be and I believe it is a great treat for those who like organ playing with Samba rhythm.

It is amazing how maturity makes us take things from a different perspective. That’s the feeling I had when took this album again for a hearing, perhaps after more than a decade interval.

My previous opinion was of a dated album, which got stuck in time through a style of interpretation and arrangements that was out of my preferences.

However, since the day Jose Matos gave it to our community, I take it for a spin every day. Thank you again Jose Matos. Now it is time to show it to Loronixers. Let’s see.

This is Lenita Bruno e Orquestra – Musica: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Poesia: Vinicius de Moraes | Por Toda Minha Vida (1959), for Festa, featuring arrangements by Maestro Leo Peracchi, Lenita Bruno’s husband at that time and not credited at the album due contractual obligations with Odeon. It is really nice to hear very different renditions of well-known Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes music with the beautiful Lenita Bruno lyric singing with the reduced, but perfectly adequate arrangements by Maestro Leo Peracchi. 


Maestro Radames Gnattali plays piano at Canta, Canta Mais, which is the track selected to Loronix Preview Center. I made several attempts to clean the back cover with no success; it brings liner notes by Antonio Carlos Jobim. You will find a version with no image processing inside the music. If someone skilled on Photoshop can make it, I will really appreciate.

Prezado Sr. Zeca: Se eu diz que lhe agradeço enormemente este disco, não posso quantificar quão enorme esse enorme pode ser, pois em todos os aspectos é uma verdadeira beleza. Me alegra muito saber que tem reconsiderado sua opinião e isso é bom, já que a vida está cheia de formosos detalhes, mas só o passo do tempo nos ajuda a reconhecerlos e apreciarlos. Permite que eu lhe peço um pequenho favor: Quando você poda e tenha um pouquitinho de tempo ¿pode reativar o link de Lenita Bruno “Work Of Love”? Faz algum tempo que eu intentei baixar esse disco mas o link está desativado. A você lhe gosta Baden Powell e a mim me gosta Laurindo Almeida. A vida e assim, cheia de contrastes. Isso é o belo que tem e o que la faz bela. Uma vez mais agradecida. Grande abraço

Olá amigo,
é tempo de comemorar os 50 anos desta verdadeira obra de arte!!!
Obra que trouxe afirmação aos grandes gênios da musica brasileira; interpretado magestosamente pela diva Lenita Bruno( e pensar que Nara Leão é lembrada como a musa da bossa nova…); uma pena que o esquecimento tenha pairado sobre aqueles “a quem não tenho permissão para citar nesta contracapa(…)”

Hello, good evening! I hope you have the same surprise I had when I got this one from the hands of Jorge Mello. I had this one on my “impossible to find” category, but thanks Jorge, we can now heard and share our thoughts about it.

A Voz e o Violao was recorded in 1960 by Luiz Bonfá and Norma Suely, owner of a very interesting voice that easily goes to popular and classic territory. Everything else I have to say are only assumptions and guesses, but I can guarantee that we are in front of a really worth checking album.
Let’s see.

This is Luiz Bonfa & Norma Suely – A Voz e o Violao (1960), for Odeon, with Luiz Bonfa guitar in all tracks and Norma Suely singing on tracks 03, 06, 07, 09 and 11. Norma Suely discography accomplishes a few 78RPM and two LPs, which includes this once in a lifetime album with Luiz Bonfa and a 1964 Polydor release produced by Joao Mello and arranged by Lindolfo Gaya, definitively worth checking out.

This is only the tip of the tip of an arrow called Jorge Mello’s music. Stay tuned, have a nice Sunday and thanks for your continuous support to Loronix.

Hello, good evening! Jorge Mello was very right providing this important record to our community. It is also a great coincidence that it is among the few albums definitely lost in my work of reactivating the missing links.

Actually, this is perhaps the most important of them all; Carícia is the debut LP of a singer that I learned to admire with Loronix creation, Sylvia Telles.
Let’s see.

This is Sylvia Telles – Caricia (1957), for Odeon, with the participation of a young musician named Antonio Carlos Jobim as arranger and conductor on two tracks, the opening track 01 – Por Causa de Voce and the closing 08 – Foi a Noite.

Maestro Leo Peracchi is also in charge of arrangements and conduction of track 06 – Chove la For a. Odeon did not credit the remaining five tracks. Caricia features Antonio Carlos Jobim songs that became standards in the following years and Sylvia Telles delivers stunning performances. I think that even those who had already the chance to listen to Caricia in the first post should make this update, now featuring high quality front and back cover scans.

Thank you. And bless you. I sent to Japan for “Bossa Balanco Balada” and it is, as I suspected it would be, a masterpice. No one sings Jobim with such depth of feeling. And her version of “Midnight Sun” may well be definitive.

Puxa, muito obrigado, Zeca! Acabei de ouvir e entrei no Blog só pra agradecer a ti. Tenho me interessado muito pela Sylvia Telles, que já é uma das minhas intérpretes prediletas. Repertório de ouro tem esse álbum, hein? Confesso que fiquei meio assustado com a capa de estilo adocicado, tipo coisa de moça. Mas o conteúdo é fora de série e garantia de muitas audições daqui pra frente.

Hi Zeca,

This is really an excellent (re)posting, but needs a little correction: – the male voice that sings with Silvinha in track n. 3, although is not credit on the disc label, is from her then husband, violonist Candinho.
This information is available on Ruy Castro’s book “Chega de saudade”, but more than this, it is different from Lucio’s voice.

O impecável bom gosto e a enorme capacidade interpretativa de Sylvia Telles (essa é a grafia correta) aparecem com grande destaque neste disco histórico.
São quatro músicas de Tom Jobim, cada uma com um parceiro diferente:

Dolores Duran,
Marino Pinto,
Vinicius de Moraes e
Newton Mendonça.
Duas músicas com a presença de seu ex,o violonista e compositor Candinho:”
"Tu e Eu”, samba canção do admirável flautista Altamiro Carrilho e Armando Nunes, música que abria e fechava o programa “Música e Romance” apresentado por eles na Tv Rio (veja “Chega de Saudade” de Ruy Castro), e o samba canção de Garoto, “Duas Contas”, com Candinho(discípulo do autor da música) ao violão.Para completar, o grande sucesso “Chove lá fora”, de Tito Madi e “Canção da Volta”, outro sucesso da dupla Ismael Netto(lider de Os Cariocas) e Antonio Maria. Um repertório soberbo, com o que havia de melhor nos anos 1955/56 e 57.

Interessante comentar que Aloísio de Oliveira, produtor artístico da Odeon na época assim declarou no folheto que acompanha a coleção de discos “Bossa nova, sua história e sua gente”, quando ouviu a gravação de “Foi a Noite”:
“Eu estava definitivamente diante de uma coisa que não esperava encontrar. Era a bossa nova na sua maior expressão”.
(veja A Canção no tempo, vol 1, de Jairo Severiano e Zuza Homem de Mello, em “Foi a Noite).
Quando ouví esta composição de Tom e Newton Mendonça não percebí nada disso, nenhum vestígio da BN alí. O uqe vcs acham?

Jorge Mello, você tem toda a razão.
Aloysio declarou inclusive que na dúvida quanto ao gênero musical que publicaria no selo do disco 78 rpm que lançou Foi a noite (prática comum naquela época), preferiu omitir essa informação.
Não se entende o porquê, pois trata-se nitidamente de um samba-canção.

 I felt the same pleasure when reposting the last Elizeth Cardoso – Noturno (1957), as I had when it was made available for the first time a year ago. I’m also feeling very good on making this one.

Amor de Gente Moca is another fantastic record released more than a year ago that was sleeping on a given day of June 2006. It is time to bring this amazingly out of print album to the spotlight, calling attention to Loronix new and old friends.

Cover artworks are improved and the music was ripped with zecalouro supervision. FLAC files are also available.

Loronixers acclaimed Sylvia Telles in the past and now it is time to celebrate her music again.

This is Sylvia Telles – Amor de Gente Moca | Musicas de Antonio Carlos Jobim (1959), for Odeon. I’m proud to own the Odeon original issue in a very good condition, the reason for this reposting. Sylvia Telles performs with orchestra the Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire. I do not have knowledge to describe Sylvia Telles singing from a technical perspective, but she has that “thing” that belongs to less than a few gifted singers I have ever heard before. Amor de Gente Moca is directed by Aloysio de Oliveira, arranged by Maestro Gaya and has Orchestra conducted by Maestro Oswaldo Borba.

This album is beautiful. The melodies / relaxed arrangements feel totally uncontrived, really organic.
To use a cheesy cliche, it’s like the songs have exsisted since the beginning of time. Really nice voice. Been a long time since i downloaded this but keep coming back to it. Over all, i know nothing of Sylvia, and anything i know of music of Brazil is mostly thanks to Loronix, but it sounds like a classic album to me.

Hello, good evening! Before presenting another special release sponsored by our great collaborator Jorge Mello, I would like to announce that we are very close to finish the work of reconstruction of all Loronix archive, and this is really great. What initially was considered a difficult and exhausting accomplishment became a unique opportunity to review all posts on an amazing, funny and really useful virtual tour of Loronix past.

I confess that I will miss these days and also the new resources created to monitor the work in progress, such like the small screens with links to the last finished weeks. These screens were really useful to motivate people to monitor the work in progress, getting along with albums that they never could have the chance without this event. I think less then a few days are necessary to have everything finished.

Meanwhile, I think it is time to check this beautiful album recorded by Maestro Radames Gnattali in 1965 in commemoration of 400 years of Rio de Janeiro city, featuring a fantastic participation of a very special guest, the legendary Ze Menezes.
Let’s see.

This is Radames Gnattali – Concerto Carioca Nr. 1 (1965), for Continental, featuring the piano and compositions of Radames Gnattali, Ze Menezes guitar and Orquestra Sinfonica Continental, conduced by Henrique Morelenbaum. This is a self-explanatory release, Concerto Carioca Nr. 1 is among the most acknowledged works of Radames Gnattali and the participation of Ze Menezes guitar is really worth checking.

Tracks include:

01 – 1º Movimento – Abertura Marcha-Rancho (Radames Gnattali)
02 – 2º Movimento – Canção (Radames Gnattali)
03 – 3º Movimento Valsa Seresteira (Radames Gnattali)

No livro “Radamés Gnattali, o eterno experimentador, de Valdinha Barbosa e Anne Marie Devos, este concerto foi composto para as festas do IV Centenário do Rio de Janeiro- homenagem a Laurindo de Almeida.
Ainda de acordo com a mesma fonte, este Concerto foi apresentado pelos solistas e a OSTM no Theatro Municipal em 30 de março de 1965.
Radamés,nosso grande “maestro mais que soberano” conjugava o binômio qualidade e produtividade de maneira exemplar. Sua contribuição a Musica Erudita Brasileira é significativa e por várias vezes escreveu concertos e peças ligeiras para instrumentos tidos como populares, tais como o violão, gaita, acordeom e bandolim.
Cercava-se, para isso, de grandes instrumentistas como Edú da Gaita, Jacob do Bandolim, Chiquinho do Acordeom, Dilermando Reis,Laurindo Almeida, Garoto e José Menezes. Sobre este último, Radamés disse(ver Radamés Gnattali, de Aluisio Didier) que:” Toca tudo o Menezes:Cavaquinho,bandolim, guitarra, violão e é ainda um bom improvisador. Ele é lá do Nordeste e sei de uma história que o Padre Cícero botou a mão na cabeça dele”.

Amazing! It is fantastic to find so much rare guitar repertoire at loronix, among so many fantastic popular records. Only Gnatalli could merge concert and popular music so well. This must be one of the very first electric guitar concertos, yes?

Você por acaso possui o disco “Cantares Brasileiros II – A Valsa”? Seria uma contribuição ótima, pois é um disco que nunca consegui achar. Tenho o Cantares Brasileiros I – A Modinha, que é impressionante (e aliás conta com a participação do Radamés em várias faixas, inclusive tocando cravo, e acompanhando a Nara Leão). Também seria um ótimo adendo. Ambos os discos são promocioniais, e até onde sei, nunca foram comercializados.

 It is possible that you think I am creating these facts just to add some drama to my writing, but it is absolutely true when I say this album was among those who could not be recovered in the reconstruction of the links and it is made available again by another contribution sponsored by Jorge Mello.

Thanks Jorge, I was really afraid to announce this weekend this anthological album was missed and now I’m really glad to bring it back to Loronix.

This is Ary Barroso e Dorival Caymmi – Ary Caymmi Dorival Barroso | Um Interpreta o Outro (1958), for Odeon, featuring Ary Barroso performing Dorival Caymmi repertoire at the piano and Dorival Caymmi playing violao and singing Ary Barroso standards,is a beauty of an album that never had the chance of a CD reissue

Ary Barroso piano is beautiful and Dorival Caymmi singing Ary Barroso music is fascinating. This cover is also amazing showing Ary Barroso at Dorival Caymmi’s universe, completely lost as a fisherman and Dorival Caymmi having a lot of fun of Ary and wearing the colors of Flamengo. I hope you have the same pleasure I had this week spinning this album after a long time.

There was a CD reissue of this album as part of the 7 CD-Box of Caymmis Odeon records called “Caymmi Amor e Mar” in 2001.

Well like I already wrote in another comment. The files here are someone else (Luiz Bonfa and Norma Suel) interpreting someone else I hope that after you have rested well after your marathon restauration of this wonderful site that I now consider such a wealth of resources that it also restores my faith in mankind to no small degree!

Hello, good morning! Yesterday I was very tired; life has been really busy down here. And when that happens, the day always ends in the worst possible way, by accident; I slept on the sofa reading the back cover of this beautiful EP sent to us by Jorge Mello. I feel in the obligation of sharing this one in this extraordinary morning post.
Let’s see.

This is Luiz Bonfa – Passeio no Rio (1960), for Odeon, featuring four songs, including the anthological Luiz Bonfa’s Manha de Carnaval, with Luiz Bonfa singing.

I could not check if these songs were recorded exclusively for this 7-inch EP, which is something that I will let you identify, I’m late for work and must leave in a second.

This is a repost of a breathtaking album, released in the very beginning of Loronix and one of posts that made me feel gladder when I made it.

Elizeth Cardoso – Noturno (1957) is really fantastic, it is the first 12-inch record by Elizeth Cardoso and has something very curious, some tunes were considered old at that time, with their first recording almost 30 years before Noturno release. In summary, we have a 50 years old album with 80-year-old songs.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – Noturno (1957), for Copacabana. Even if you already have the earlier music from the original post, take this one. The music is improved and was taken by one of those last anonymous contributions to Loronix. There are songs of Noel Rosa, Custodio Mesquita, Ary Barroso, Silvio Caldas mixed with fresh compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Tito Madi.

This album is a classic among classics and a doorway to a time–or, should I say, grandeur–lost.
Each song is a production done with consummate taste. Elizete Cardoso is Brazil’s nightengale. Her vibrato is so beautiful that at times it sounds like the trilling of a bird. On “Chove La Fora” she reaches heights of vocal art that I have rarely heard. And “Noturno” is such a tour de force for her considerable talents that I can see why it is the title tune. And, finally, mention must be made of the exquisite introduction to “Se Todos Fessem Iquais a Voce.” With the posting of this extraordinary album, your blog becomes an oasis of beauty and of transcendant art. You will find it hard to top this album. It is a masterpiece.

Obrigado Zecalouro por mais essa jóia do cancioneiro brasileiro. Esse é, talvez, o mais clássico lp da Divina. Não há nada que se compare a interpreção soberta de Elizete em Noturno.
Uma sugestão: tenho sérias dificuldades com o inglês e porisso solicito que, se for possível, faça seus comentário dos discos também em português. Pode ser mesmo em manauense.

Hello David, Hello Artur,
Before Noturno, zecalouro was sure that the only human on earth that could sing as sharp as an instrument was Joao Gilberto. This LP shows that I was wrong.
By this record, the production, repertoire selection and arrangements it is clear that Elizeth has control of everything she does, end to end. I don’t know if you understand Portuguese but this is clearly a conceptual LP where each song links with the next building a theme as result of the overall experience.
Angela Maria is another great singer, perhaps better than Elizeth. In the other hand, Angela does not have any kind of control of overall recording process, resulting in some weird LP as we could see on her last post.

I am a long time admirer of your blog and have been meaning to leave you comments many times. You do such a great job of presenting all this wonderful music. I want to thank you for offering this Elizeth Cardoso album in flac. I prefer the lossless format and would love to see all future posts be in flac. I do understand that the files are larger, but from an archival point of view you only need to rip the vinyl ONCE and then it can be compressed to whatever degree people want.

My only small, tiny complaint is that I wish you would use diacritical marks when you tag the files. I may be overly picky, but it makes reading the track information (in my poor Portuguese) much easier if I don’t have to struggle with whether it was an e (and) or an é (is) on the display. I also wouldn’t have to constantly keep making notes to change nao to não and coracao to coração. It is amazing how many times these words are used in song titles!
I don’t mean to gripe. It would just make what is a great blog into a blog maravilhoso (is blog masculine or feminine?).
Thanks again for a wonderful site. Keep up the great work.

Finally, Fim de Noite arrives at Loronix. Once again by the tireless Jorge Mello, continuously showing the great passion he has for Brazilian music, knowledge and a sincere sharing spirit by make available to us fantastic picks taken from his personal collection.

Everybody know I was hunting this one to replace my own copy, terrible scratch and impossible to make an acceptable transfer.

Fim de Noite was recorded in 1957, the same year of another Elizeth Cardoso album that is one of my favorites, Noturno.
Let’s see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – Fim de Noite (1957), for Copacabana. I don’t know which one was first released or recorded, probably Fim de Noite came first as it was released on 10-inch. Both are very similar, but Fim de Noite has a dark atmosphere, sometimes sad and with a strange beauty that is very difficult to resist.

Hello, good evening! I am very happy to update Loronix after four days, which is the largest hiatus since Loronix creation two years ago.

I hope you missed myself and new music such as I did. There were four days, but seems to be four years, in the third night I had a dream I was in the middle of amazing blog posts. Anyway, I will need some adaptation time until getting the old pace, and this is the reason why I’m making this really nice record in the hope you don’t read me, kindly sent and strongly recommended by Jorge Mello. Let’s see.

This is Laurindo Almeida e Ray Turner – Impressoes do Brasil (1957), for Capitol, featuring Laurindo Almeida guitar and Ray Turner piano performing a Brazilian repertoire with selected cuts from Radames Gnattali, Heitor Villa Lobos, Laurindo Almeida and the legendary Garoto. Maestro Radames Gnattali has the whole side A, the only side the unknown Ray Turner plays, while side B features two Laurindo Almeida compositions, one Villa Lobos choro and three Garoto tunes performed by Laurindo, which are the ones that I like most and worth the entire album. Thanks Jorge Mello for this first out of several unknown Laurindo Almeida LPs.

“Impressões do Brasil” traz as primeiras gravações comerciais de duas pérolas da produção violonística de Garoto:Gracioso e Nosso Choro. A música Choro Triste(nº1) também conhecida como Tristezas de um violão, fora gravada 6 anos antes pelo próprio autor.
O Concertino nº2 foi dedicado a Garoto e por ele apresentado no Teatro Municipal RJ acompanhado da Orquestra Sinfonica daquele teatro.Aqui ele é apresentado na sua versão reduzida para piano e violão. Serenade, autoria de Laurindo, é dedicada a Garoto.

BrazilOnGuitar says: Unfortunately, we did not find out the exact recording date of this first live record by BP. The half-hour recording in the Teatro Santa Rosa is another proof of his guitar abilities in 1966 and stands for his intense playing style. The sound quality of the recording is not the best and could not be improved significantly with the 2003 cd re-issue. However, BP's guitar playing is so precise and exciting that the sound can be overlooked.

The recordings give the impression of a creative and very vital musician, whose life is completely devoted to music. At this time BP had developed great musicality and an impressive technique. It seems that on Teatro Santa Rosa he wanted to set other standards. In his high tempi there could be missed the depth and relaxation of later years, which is understandable thinking of his playing speed.

Hello, good evening! It is amazing that even after 2 years Loronix is still capable of revealing never released albums of very important artists. I believe that only a few friends had the chance to hear this album, recorded by Tito Madi in partnership with Maestro Rafael Puglielli in 1958 and never released on CD.

Another awesome Jorge Mello contribution, which I would like to say thanks for keeping us amazed with really nice music and content.

This is Tito Madi – Sua Voz… Suas Composicoes (1958), for Continental, featuring only Tito Madi compositions and Maestro Rafael Puglielli performs solo with orchestra on tracks 01 and 07 and probably delivers accompaniment to Tito Madi across the whole session. Little I know about this really hard to find album, such as all others recorded by Tito Madi in the late 50′s.

Hello, good evening! I want to introduce Loronixers to a new artist, which is a very old recommendation by Refer, made as soon as Loronix has started. By the way, it has been a long time I do not see Refer on comments. I hope he shows up with this album, another nice contribution by Jorge Mello.

Vanja Orico is an extraordinary artist, being also an actress, actually, her career as an actress is stronger than her singing activities. She is really a complex and intriguing woman.
Let’s see.

This is Vanja Orico – Viagem Musical (1955), for Sinter, which is Vanja Orico debut LP, performing a repertoire based on different Brazilian traditional music from several regions, including Samba, Baiao, Xote, Toada, Capoeira and some other styles I never heard about, such as Côco and Rojao.

The result is very satisfactory with Vanja Orico delivering beautiful singing and some interpretation of each style. A Google search on Vanja Orico returns loads and loads of information and I learned today that her first experience as a singer was in 1950 when she was 16 studying at a num college in Europe.

Vanja Orico came out one day for a walking and found a movie set on a busy street in Italy. There was Frederico Fellini that invited Vanja Orico to make a participation on his movie singing Meu Limao, Meu Limoeiro and playing violao.

Thanks Jorge Mello for this first and really nice Vanja Orico album at Loronix.

I love this album! I intended to send a copy of this to Loronix a long time ago but coauldn’t make a decent transfer. I found a copy in a charity shop in Leith in Edinburgh a few years ago – I’m always amazed at how many Brazilian records I find here in Scotland. Vanja’s versions of these songs have led me to investigate many other artists, in particular Dorival Caymmi. I believe that Mule Rendeira was used in the film O Cangaceiro, and was subsequently adopted by many singers around the world. It was also this record which introduced me to the fascinating story of Lampiao.

Brazilian female singers have something special. Nelson Motta said one day that Brazil is a country of female singers. I agree.

Our community gives always a nice feedback on Brazilian divas. It is time to remember a Brazilian diva that was introduced to us by Caetano Rodrigues, Thelma Soares or just Thelma. I’m quite sure that only a few Loronixers knew Thelma before presented here.

Caetano is now thrilling us with a new female singer and I think she can make as Thelma.

Meet Marisa Barroso with the legendary Astor Silva from Os Ipanemas.

This is Marisa Barroso & Astor Silva – Marisa Barroso / Astor (1963), for Columbia. Thelma was revealed by Vinicius de Moraes and Beatriz Azevedo de Brito by Ary Barroso, this is the reason for the artistic name. Marisa Barroso recorded several 78rpm and three LPs, such as Thelma that also made three albums. Anyway, I think it is better hear Marisa Barroso & Astor Silva, instead of finding coincidences. Astor is a top-notch musician that we know for several albums at Loronix, performing the roles of trombonist and arranger.

“Uff,yeahh” Caetano makes my day.
Unbelievable! Yesterday I thought about this Barros/Silva Lp of my vinil collection -very worry about knowing about the poor condition of my Lp in hope to find a better one day and this morning I woke up and what see my eyes- Such things are only possible with Caetano-who elese can show better the history of the bossa nova years than Caetano.

This is a very special gift that our community received today by our friend Cyril Morana from France. I don’t know how to express myself to show my gratitude to receive this really special record on such important day.

Cyril says he is very sad with Henri Salvador passing last Wednesday and I join him on his feelings for the lost of a true genius of planet Earth music.

This is Henri Salvador – Dans Mon Ile Nr. 3 (1958), for Barclay, in the 45rpm EP format, featuring Dans Mon Ile, a very important song that influenced Brazilian music and Bossa Nova, according with Antonio Carlos Jobim and many others.

Henri Salvador performs Dans Mon Ile and it is the definitive version among many others I have heard so far. I’m really glad to read the feedback given to yesterday’s tribute to Henri Salvador and with Cyril’s help I think we now have the tribute Henri Salvador deserves. The music is available as a direct link to everybody.

I only heard a couple songs of Henri Salvador’s from this “Jazz in Paris” compilation album. I’m saddened to hear he passed away. But thanks Loronix, for sharing this little 3 song EP of his.

Henri Salavdor falava que quando Tom Jobim ouviu a musica “Dans mon ile” ele pensou “isso que tem que fazer, afrouxar o tempo do samba e por uma bonita melodia e belos acordos por cima”.
Caetano Veloso canto esta musica no album Outras Palavras
“Voilà ce qu’il faut faire” s’était dit Carlos Jobim en écoutant “Dans mon île”, racontait Henri Salvador. “Ralentir le tempo de la samba et mettre une jolie mélodie et de beaux accords dessus. Donc, je suis à l’origine de la bossa-nova sans l’avoir voulu.”

Henri Salvador was a great artist, entertainer/chansonnier, marvelous singer/composer and one of the most important 20th century genius of popular music!
Excuse me… but… Mr. Henri Salvador didn’t “create” or “inspire” the Bossa Nova movement. In fact, he included the Bossa Bova beat style in several own songs… after 1958 (official year of the birth of Bossa Nova in Rio de Janeiro…).
Ask about it to Mr. Ruy Castro… the writer of “Chega de Saudade”, the best book of Bossa Nova history.
I don’t want to create polemics… I just want to know the true about this fact. And I always love Henri Salvador musical work and his swinging voice. He deserves all my révérence and love.

Hello, good evening! It is really nice to be back to Loronix after 2 days of rest, which in fact were taken by lots of very hard and productive work.

Miltinho and Doris Monteiro were during this time and I believe it was a great choice. Anyway, the show must go on, and I would like to start with another flawless release sponsored by Jorge Mello, featuring an artist appreciated by our community as a whole.

This is Waltel Branco – Musicas do Seculo XVI ao Seculo XX (1974), for Itamaraty. Actually, this album was first released in 1974 by another label, the tiny Magic Music, and Jorge Mello presents a later Itamaraty reissue, whose date I could not track on my searches. The album is exactly what its title suggests; Waltel Branco delivers violao renditions of music written across the XVI and XX centuries, including his own compositions, such like track 09 – Preludio Sarabanda e Bourree (Waltel Branco), which is also my choice to Loronix Preview Center.

Zeca, você não sabe a quantidade de tempo que tenho sem escutar estes Estudios de Sor.
Comparados com outros Estudios de outros compositores eles são muito simples, mas todo o que tem de sencillez também o tem de doçura. É muito bom que você tenha publicado este disco porque a música clássica e muito bela e é bom que a gente possa ter contato com ela ainda que seja a través de músicos populares que a gente conhece. Muito, muito agradecida. Abraços,

Hello, good evening! I think we will have today the same situation we had tomorrow on our last post, an unknown album recorded by a great artist and never released in CD. Maybe I’m wrong, but except from some occasional and small reissues, Quarteto em Cy – Querelas do Brasil, never had a chance to be released at the digital age.

This is a repost, Querelas do Brasil was made available first in November 2006 with no back cover, transferred at a low bitrate and had a track missing. Everything is now updated and I hope you have a very nice time with this great vocal group.

This is Quarteto em Cy – Querelas do Brasil (1978), for Philips, which is probably the most “political flavored” album released by the girls, with several lyrics about Brazilian problems of that time. By the way, the album title is taken from one of those songs; Querelas do Brasil by Mauricio Tapajos and Aldir Blanc.

Such as many Brazilian albums released in the 70’s, Querelas do Brazil features a constellation of Brazilian musicians, including Sivuca, Antonio Adolfo, Luizao, Neco, Copinha, Raul de Barros and many others.

O Quarteto em Cy é um marco na MPB de qualidade. Pena não ser divulgado e executado como deveria, para que as pessoas mais “mudernas” pudessem desfrutar de música que vai da empolgação à delicadeza, sem perder a classe e o prazer que esse antológico quarteto nos proporciona. Palavras de fã, é claro.
A propósito, teria como conseguir o link para o disco “And roses, and roses”, do Quarteto em Cy & Caymmi? É um dos pouquíssimos que me faltam, e não o consigo em lugar nenhum.

Hello, good evening! I’m back, and it is always very nice to be back to Loronix. Thanks for being here! I spoke about a given Musidisc release to stay on top of the excellent JIN contribution. However, a technical problem with the music and image transfer occurs and we will need to wait an additional day for it.

Meanwhile, I want to share an album that certainly would not be a strong candidate to Loronix under normal conditions. It was released by Equipe, another legendary Brazilian record company in the 60’s, featuring a group that I never heard about, which is Bossa 4, a blend of instrumental and vocal group, featuring guitar, bass, drums, percussion and a very nice organist.
Let’s see.

This is Bossa 4 – Repeteco Outra Vez (1968), for Equipe. Little I know about this album and this group, but I’m confident that additional information should come very soon from several and serious Equipe’s collectors around Loronix, especially Bossanov, our rarities advisor from Russia.

Some time ago I think, that “Bossa 4″ was the extension of “Bossa Tres”, but according to Instituto Memoria Musical Brasileira, “Bossa 4″ members was:
- Carmindo (g, voc),
- Joy (dr, perc),
- Pedrinho (b),
- Borginhos (org,vib,p, acc), so it’s totally different cast, probably from Jovem Garda movement.
And off topic question for discussion: when we will celebrate the 50th birthday of bossa nova?

Anyway, now I can focus on something I’m doing that has a strong influence to this post. I’m trying to write an article to approach on a structured manner a fascinating aspect of Brazilian instrumental music in the 60’s, which is the use of nicknames by renowned artists on records, such like
Ed Lincoln recording as Don Pablo de Havana, the last released provided by Jose Ignacio Neto. It is incredible the number of musicians who made such thing. I think the most popular and relevant case is Bob Fleming, a fictional musician created by Nilo Sergio’s Musidisc label that had two artists playing the Bob Fleming role, the legendary Moacyr Silva and Zito Righi.
Let’s see:

This is Bob Fleming – Bob Fleming Interpreta Boleros Volume 3 (1965), for Masterpiece Masters, a Musidisc label. I never found official information on which musician is behind each Bob Fleming release, but this one seems to be a Moacyr Silva session, delivering renditions of Bolero standards with his sax tenor. This cover is scaring at a first sight, but soon you will get used with the naked ladies around the sax.

Hello Zeca, greetings from China!

So I can see you have taken up the theme of pseudonimous recordings after the Don Pablo sessions…certainly a fun game.

One of the comments suggested that Nilo Sergio was behind Os Romanticos de Cuba and that is correct, confirmed to me by Durval Ferreira (himself user of psuedonyms such as ‘Gatuss’ and ‘Devel’!) who also told me that Moacyr Silva was Bob Fleming. Now whether Musidisc ‘owned’ the name Bob Fleming or whether Moacyr was the only Bob Fleming is difficult to say!
