Hello, good evening! This is another awesome contribution sponsored by Jorge Mello, featuring – forgive me if I’m wrong – the last album recorded by the Brazilian guitarist Codo, a very important musician acknowledged by many others, such like Elizeth Cardoso and Baden Powell, who wrote a tune dedicated to Codo, Um Abraco no Codo, released on Baden Powell’s 27 Horas de Estudio (1969), Elenco.
Let’s see.

This is Codo – Coisas da Minha Terra (1978), for CID, a beautiful celebration to Codo’s music. Codo is backed by a constellation of Brazilian musicians, including Sivuca (also in charge of arrangements), Wilson das Neves, Dino 7 Cordas, Copinha, Neco, Paulo Moura, among many others.

Coisas da Minha Terra works under two different concepts.
Side A is all instrumental and brings an interview with Codo between the four tracks with the participation of Sergio Cabral, Sivuca and Antonio Mascarenhas.
Side B has lyrics with Codo singing, playing and supported by a choir, including Jaime Alem and Nair Candia. Elizeth Cardoso is the special guest on Side A second track, Indecisa Aurora (Codo / Itamar Souza e Silva). Coisas da Minha Terra should address wants and needs of everybody with these two different approaches.

Tracks include:

Nacional e free!
Grande abraço a todos!

Hello, good evening! I found this album on one of those old vinyl shops in Rio, and I always thought it was just a compilation with tracks taken from previous albums.

If I knew this is the first album recorded by Os Cariocas after a 21 years hiatus, I would have made it available at Loronix earlier. Minha Namorada features a repertoire with the greatest Os Cariocas tunes. The cover brings autographs of each component, where Quartera signs in place of Luiz Roberto, who unfortunately died in this period. Confirmation is needed, but I believe this album was signed by Os Cariocas after the tragic Luiz Roberto passing.
Let’s see.

This is Os Cariocas – Minha Namorada (1990), for Som Livre. It is unbelievable this album is out of print. The recording quality is amazing and I really recommend that you take good headphones to hear the sophisticated vocal arrangements made by Severino Filho. Os Cariocas is really a unique and very special vocal group.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Severino Filho
(piano, 1st voice, arrangements)

Badeco
(violao, 2nd voice)

Luiz Roberto
(bass, 3rd voice)

Quartera
(drums, 4th voice)

02 – Samba do Avião (Tom Jobim)
03 – Tema Para Lúcia (Severino Filho)

Hello again! Busy day at Loronix today, this is good. Before talking about this reposting, I would like to say that I received emails from friends who live outside Brazil asking for directions to purchase Charles Gavin’s book 300 Discos Importantes da Música Brasileira. My advice is to use Livraria Cultura on-line, they ship outside Brazil, in five continents, check this page to see Livraria Cultura shipping rates & policies. And good luck!

This is Jacob do Bandolim – Epoca de Ouro | Jacob e Seu Bandolim em HI-FI (1958), for RCA Victor. Jacob do Bandolim recorded this album in 1958, and it is really different from his regular choro releases. Jacob is backed by and orchestra arranged by Maestro Radames Gnatalli and Maestro Carioca with Maestro Zaccarias in charge of conduction. There is also a Conjunto, not with a traditional Choro formation, featuring bass, piano, sax and accordion performed by renowned Brazilian musicians. The first post was made with a mid 60’s RCA Candem reissue and this is the first RCA Victor original issue, featuring this beautiful cover that finally arrives at Loronix.

Hello, good evening! I’m not a big fan of piano solo albums; they use to be very complex, requiring a lot of concentration until you understand everything. I’m not taking in consideration this is a piano solo album played by one of the greatest Brazilian musicians ever. If I took it for a spin without knowing this is Radames Gnattali, I would be also really impressed about this music.

I know we had previous piano solo albums played by Radames Gnattali, but what makes the difference here is the repertoire, full of tunes that we know by heart, making easy to understand Radames Gnattali improvisation at a first hearing.

I would like to say thank you to Jorge Mello, for another fantastic contribution to Loronix.

Let’s see.

This is Radames Gnattali – Radames Gnattali (1984), for Libertas, recorded live at Sala Cecilia Meirelles, Rio de Janeiro, December 1984. I can’t remember what I was doing on December 1984, but if I could travel back to the past, I would like to be at this concert. Front cover is also worth checking out with a Radames Gnattali drawing made by the unique style of Nassara. The back cover also includes a handwriting message by Antonio Carlos Jobim, inviting Radames Gnattali to drink a “chope” with “amendoim”.

Tracks include:

01 – Carinhoso (Pixinguinha / João de Barro)
02 – Ponteio (Edu Lobo / Capinan)
03 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
04 – Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
05 – Chovendo na Roseira (Tom Jobim)
06 – Manhã de Carnaval (Luis Bonfá / Antônio Maria)
07 – Cochicho (Pixinguinha)
08 – Do Lago à Cachoeira (Sergio Ricardo)
09 – Nova Ilusão (José Menezes / Luis Bittencourt)

Hello, good evening! Mr. Jose Ignacio Neto, kindly known as JIN, the third generation of the Ignacio’s family, a family devoted to Brazilian music, and also the owner and maintainer of the legendary “A Volta” Podcast, is back to Loronix.

Let’s see.

This is Manfredo Fest – After Hours (1972), for Daybreak, featuring Manfredo Fest piano backed by a group of American musicians. JIN wants to start great and I agree this is a great start. Manfredo Fest is one of the most requested artists by Loronix community. He was a Bossa Nova pioneer in Brazil and had also a very solid career in the US, where he made his move in the mid 1960′s, invited by Sergio Mendes and never came back to Brazil. JIN also says this album is a sought after collectors piece and widely unknown in Brazil.

Hello, good evening! I need energy this week, we are about to release a new website, which is the first Brazilian instrumental music encyclopedia, something already spoken here at Loronix.
This is the final week; the website is schedule to go live next Monday and these days should be really busy down here.

Meanwhile, it is important to keep Loronix updated, but the announcement of our last 700 hundred albums donator needs to be postponed once again. It is an extremely important contribution that needs to be formally addressed with all the necessary bells and whistles.

There is also a very important event today that I Loronix will be missing, which is Antonio Carlos Jobim 14th years passing in 8th December 1994. This is a really important date and I will make a special post in the forthcoming days.

Anyway, let’s make this album, the second contribution by our so far mysterious friend. Let’s rock!

This is Geraldo Vandre – Canto Geral (1968), for Odeon, featuring the participation of Trio Maraya delivering vocals, instrumental arrangements, vocal arrangements and their typical instruments playing, such like queixada-de-burro, ca-chi-chi and viola. According with Luiz Americo and his
100 Discos Fundamentais compilation, this is the most politically engaged Geraldo Vandre album, released in a time where Brazil was about to enter on the hardest period of the military dictatorship with the release of AI-5. You can check Luiz Americo review at this link. By the way, Canto Geral is listed at Luiz Americo website as one of the 100 essential Brazilian popular music albums.

Tracks include:

01 – Terra Plana (Geraldo Vandré)
02 – Companheira (Geraldo Vandré)
03 – Maria Rita (Geraldo Vandré)
04 – De Serra de Terra e de Mar (Geraldo Vandré / Theo de Barros / Hermeto Pascoal)
05 – Cantiga Brava (Geraldo Vandré)
06 – Ventania (De Como Um Homem Perdeu Seu Cavalo e Continuou Andando) (Geraldo Vandré / Hilton Accioli)
07 – O Plantador (Geraldo Vandré / Hilton Accioli)
08 – João e Maria (Geraldo Vandré / Hilton Accioli)
09 – Arueira (Geraldo Vandré)
10 – Guerrilheira (Geraldo Vandré / Hilton Accioli)

Luiz Americo escreveu:

Hello, good evening! My pick for this Saturday was decided on a different manner. I’m in a rush here, and I did not took this album for a hearing the way I use to do. But you should agree it is not necessary. This album never had a CD reissue and it unknown to many friends.

The little I heard was enough to understand this record is such like a friend’s meeting, very relaxed session. The duo brings to studio renowned friends, such like Maria Bethania, Maria Creuza, Sergio Endrigo and Cyro Monteiro, which is his last record session participation before his passing in the same year.
Let’s see.

This is Toquinho & Vinicius de Moraes – Toquinho / Vinicius & Amigos (1974), for RGE, featuring Vinicius de Moraes compositions performed with special guests. It is easy to identify each performer at this cover artwork, except Chico Buarque, the one in the right, besides Sergio Endrigo. Find the list of performers below and have a nice Sunday. Christmas is very close and if you do not reach Loronix until there, take my Happy Christmas message with you.

Hello, good evening! I said yesterday that I would be breaking today the series of posts from the 1970′s decade with something very old. I’m paying my bill with the oldest album I could find here, from 1955.

I love the records made by Musidisc in the 1950′s. The artwork is ahead of that time and was probably made by a single person since the style is unique and very easy to identify.

Who is this artist? This is something we can ask to Jorge Mello, just visiting his new website, featuring his writing and Brazilian music vintage pictures never seen before. You can reach the new Jorge Mello’s website at
http://jorgecarvalhodemello.blogspot.com.
Let’s see.

This is No Mundo do Samba | Volume 1 (1955), for Musidisc, a compilation of Samba tunes performed by artists from Musidisc cast, featuring Leo Peracchi, Trio Surdina, Britinho, Djalma Ferreira, Roberto Luna and an artist that I never heard before, Rud Wharton, which is probably a well-known musician recording by Musidisc under a nickname.

Tracks include:

01 – Gafieira (Djalma Ferreira) Djalma Ferreira
02 – Você É Tormento (Nilo Sergio / Garoto) Leo Peracchi e Orquestra 03 – Vingança (Lupicínio Rodrigues) Trio Surdina
04 – Dora (Dorival Caymmi) Rud Wharton
05 – No Tabuleiro da Baiana (Ary Barroso) Léo Peracchi e Orquestra 06 – Lilian Britinho
07 – Está Desfeito (Manezinho Araújo / David Raw / Aldacir Louro) Roberto Luna
08 – Dia de Sol (João Leal Brito ”Britinho”) – Casinha da Colina (Adpt. João Leal Brito ”Britinho”) Nova Ilusão (José Menezes / Luis Bittencourt) Britinho

Hello, Happy New Year! I want to open this year with something different and also unique. It is not music, but poetry, written and spoken by one of the greatest Brazilian artists from the last century, Vinicius de Moraes.

According with Sombras, this little EP was released in 1959; I could not find this information inspecting the cover, as well the record label. Anyway, this is one of the first albums recorded by Vinicius de Moraes as main performer.
Let’s see.

This is Vinicius de Moraes – Vinicius de Moraes (1959), for Festa, featuring poetry written and spoken by Vinicius de Moraes. As a second warning, this is not music, but poetry in Portuguese language. I’m not versed on poetry, but these five tracks and Vinicius de Moraes interpretation of his work are delicious to hear

Tracks include,
sorry, poems are:

01 – O Mergulhador (Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Soneto Nr. 2 – De Meditacao (Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Os Acrobatas (Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – A Hora Intima (Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Receita de Mulher (Vinicius de Moraes)

I received an email from the owner of one of the coolest blogs I know, Toque Musical, which is now up and running on a new website, very similar to the previous one, but I recommend that you follow this link to make sure you will reach the right website, here: http://toque-musicall.blogspot.com. If you like Brazilian music and LPs, Toque Musical is mandatory.

TM (is that your name?) also said he made a long time ago Vitrine Odeon, and kindly sent to Loronix the scan of the original cover. Thanks TM for your great sharing spirit.

Good, the pieces are getting together, and now we need only Clovis Pereira – Ritmos Aluciantes and Elizeth Cardoso – Cancao de Amor audios. I want to thank TM for this update and also remind you again to reach his website at http://toque-musicall.blogspot.com

Hello, good evening! Everything went wrong today and this is the reason why three covers are available. Perhaps it is the anticipated effect of the move, scheduled for Tuesday, next week, or perhaps just a coincidence. I had an amazing plan. I started with Elizeth Cardoso – Cancao de Amor (1957), a compilation released by Todamerica featuring Elizeth Cardoso phonograms taken from old 78rpm records. I heard it from the start until the end and liked a lot; the repertoire is awesome and features several Brazilian popular music standards.

Unfortunately, the output I got when transferring was really bad, several scratches and a strange background noise. I had to decline. If someone has this album and sharing spirit, please write me using the comment section or my email.

Recovered from Elizeth Cardoso’s trauma, all my attention was turned to another target, a sough after album by Loronix community and LP collectors worldwide, which is Clovis Pereira Ritmos Alucinantes (1957), for the obscure label Repertorio. This is album brings the first Hermeto Pascoal recording as an instrumentalist.

However, I had another problem, the record inside was not Clovis Pereira, but a compilation released by Odeon featuring Aloysio de Oliveira telling the story of high fidelity on side B and various artists on side A. Almost losing my forces, I decided to make it and tell you this long story.
Let’s see.

This is Varios Artistas – Vitrine Odeon (no date), for Odeon, featuring Aloysio de Olivera e O Bando da Lua, Maestro Leo Peracchi, Fon-Fon e Sua Orquestra, Mario Reis, Francisco Alves, Steve Bernard e Seu Conjunto and the first track I had the chance to hear with Conjunto Brasil Sonoro, featuring Altamiro Carrilho (flute), Carlos Matos (violao), Chaim Lewak (piano), Agostinho Silva (organ), Norato (trombone), Chiquinho do Acordeom (acordion), Hans (oboe), Jayme Araujo (alto sax), Formiga (piston) e Netinho (clarinet), a constellation of Brazilian musicians.

Martoni:

Tracks:

lado A

1 - Adeus Maria Fulo - Leo Peracchi e Sua Orquestra
2 - Chatanooga Choo Choo - Aloysio de Oliveira e Seu Bando da Lua
3 - Rouxinol Alegre - Steve Bernard e Seu Conjunto
4 - X-9 - Conjunto Brasil Sonoro

Lado B

5 - Breve História em Alta Fidelidade - Aloysio de Oliveira

Dear Zecaloruro, Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Elizete Cardoso’s album… but I have good news for you! Few years ago RGE released a set of 3 CDs containing all Elizete’s songs from Transamérica. Well… I have the CDs and I already checked: I have all the 8 songs listed in the album cover. Please let me know what and how you need these songs and I’ll glad to share them with Loronix. All the best, Carlos

Dear Carlos,
It would be a great achievement to Loronix archives and for all who admire Elizeth Cardoso, such like me. Please tell me what is needed to make it viable or write me at zecalouro@gmail.com.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
zeca

Hello, good evening! My Internet access stills very limited with extremely slow upload rates. I did not want to keep Loronix with no updates today and my solution was gathering a 10-inch album, which is not an issue since we have truly amazing albums to explore in the format.

This one is a perfect example, this is the second LP released by Maestro Radames Gnattali at Continental. For reasons that I cannot understand Radames Gnattali name is not available at the front cover, just like the first one. It is necessary to read the back cover for this information. I would like to remember that covers and individual tracks are always available at the end my writings as individual downloads; the covers are available as direct download links with no Rapidshare.
Let’s see.

This is Radames Gnattali – Joias Musicais do Brasil (1954), for Continental, featuring Radames Gnattali selections. arrangements and piano.

A small and not credited band makes the accompaniement. All my searches on this album failured, which was the way I choose to retrieve credit information on the good musicians we have here, especially the guitar and accordion player.

Tracks include:

01 – Rancho Fundo (Ary Barroso / Lamartine Babo)
02 – Despertar da Montanha (Eduardo Souto)
03 – Casinha Pequenina (Tradicional)
04 – Luar de Paquetá (Hermes Fontes / Freire Júnior)
05 – Nuvens (Eduardo Souto)
06 – Carinhoso (Pixinguinha / João de Barro)
07 – Guacyra (Hekel Tavares / Joracy Camargo)
08 – Linda Flor (Henrique Vogeler / Cândido Costa / Luiz Peixoto)

Absolutely lovely album. Thank you so much.

A correction: the lyricist of “Guacyra” is Joracy (not Juraci) Camargo.
Also, since the lyricists of the other songs were named, it’s only fair to name those of “Linda Flor” as well. They are Cândido Costa and Luiz Peixoto (who wrote different lyrics but are traditionally included in the credits).
Thanks again for this jewel.

Hello, good evening! This is the third album I’m making available from this obscure record company with the name and logo based on an animal that does not exists in Brazil, the legendary Tiger.

Little I know about this label except these albums, the excellent
Moacyr Marques e Seu Conjunto – Jazz & Bossa Nova (1959), a contribution of my Mentor Caetano Rodrigues and this early Hermeto Pascoal recording with Pernambuco do Pandeiro e Seu Regional – Batucando no Morro (1958), both really worth checking out.

Catulo de Paula is an artist requested by many friends, many and important friends, such like Frank-Oliver Hellman, which I want to say thanks for recommending Catulo de Paula a long time ago.
Let’s see.

This is Catulo de Paula – Catulo Canta no Michel (1959), for Tiger. Catulo de Paula delivers a repertoire based on his performances at Michel Bar, a nightclub I never heard about. According with Guio de Moraes liner notes, Catulo de Paula performed on Michel Bar for more than a year, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. Ze Menezes delivers fantastic instrumental accompaniment to Catulo de Paula leading a trio of guitar, drums and bass. By the way, Ze Menezes gives a real lesson of how accompany singer with a guitar. Really worth checking out.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Ze Menezes
(violao)

Paulo
(bass)

Trinca
(drums)

Track List

01 – Balada Triste (Dalton Vogeler / Esdras Pereira da Silva)
02 – Viva Meu Samba (Billy Blanco)
03 – Suas Mãos (Antônio Maria / Pernambuco)
04 – Pau-de-arara (Guio de Morais / Luis Gonzaga)
05 – Tenho Pena da Noite (Catulo de Paula / Marino Pinto)
06 – Lamento (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio)
07 – Castigo (Dolores Duran)
08 – Aliança (Madame Fulano de Tal) (Cyro Monteiro / Dias da Cruz)
09 – Nosso Mocambo (Catulo de Paula)
10 – Serenata do Adeus (Vinicius de Moraes)
11 – Rio Triste (Tito Madi)
12 – Último Pau-de-arara (J. P. Guimarães / Venâncio / Corumba)

Hi Zeca,
thank you that you remembered my wish to hear a Catulo de Paula album after all this time. This is a great album and I didn´t know its existence. In the discography at allbrazilianmusic his 1963 album “A Simplicidade de Catulo de Paula” is listed as his debut (Odeon MOFB 3345). This Tiger album from 1959 is not listed there so this is a real find. The 1963 album looks also interesting because all compositions there are by Catulo himself.
Catulo de Paulo was also involved in the soundtrack recording for the Jean-Paul Belmondo film “L´homme de Rio”, which was shot in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia in 1963. He participated also in the album “Pobre Menina Rica” by Carlos Lyra and Dulce Nunes, already posted at Loronix. Thank you again Zeca for this great post

Só tristeza e dor vai me acompanhar
Até que a fé que tinha
A minha esperança quer me abandonar

If you are reading this text just to realize if this record is good or not, take my advice and skip my writing going straight to the music at the link bellow. This is a fantastic album. Duncan Lamont is the name of the main performer.

I’m not versed on Jazz such many Loronixers, but I bet that this album and Duncan Lamont is unknown to many friends. I will be straightforward; it is not fair to drag you with my writing this time.

This is Duncan Lamont – Lo Mejor de La Bossa Nova (1970), for Pathe (Argentina). Duncan Lamont is not Argentinean and Caetano shows us the Argentinean edition of The Best of The Bossa Novas, originally issued by MFP in UK. Duncan Lamont was born in Scotland and is a renowned studio musician, played with almost everyone in show business. It is a pleasure to hear Duncan sax on this very solid album, but what amazes me most is the performance of the three bass players at the set, everything works fine with The Best of the Bossa Novas.

Tracks include:

01 – Desafinado
02 – Un Hombre y una Mujer
03 – Sunny
04 – Meditacion
05 – Manana de Carnaval
06 – Insensatez
07 – La Chica de Ipanema
08 – Corcovado
09 – Samba de una Nota Sola
10 – La Sombra de tu Sonrisa
11 – Llamame
12 – Llevame voltando a la Luna

Martoni:

Tracks:

01. Desafinado
02. A Man And A Woman
03. Sunny
04. Meditation
05. Manha De Carnaval
06. How Insensitive

B1. The Girl From Ipanema
B2. Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars

Hello, good evening! I’m very proud of you. We are very close to reach our goal at another dedicated server campaign. This is really awesome. Thank you! I thought we would not make it this year. And the most important, this kind of initiative is all about commitment, is about my commitment to the community to keep Loronix alive for another year. Anyway, I cannot say anything besides thank you to all and the show must go on.

Yesterday, I was chatting with Cleber and Renato at Loronix Live Chat, which is the chatting application inside Loronix Forum and Cleber suggested an LP from the vocal group O Quarteto. Cleber said also that the four O Quarteto members are all engineers, something that I could not check.

The first time I saw a LP from O Quarteto was at NAmerica Loves SAmerica from Now, that has the last and late O Quarteto LP recorded in 1977.

I’m introducing this vocal group with another release; this is O Quarteto – O Quarteto (1968), for Phillips, which is O Quarteto debut LP. I was not successful searching bios information from this band, but many people appreciates this group that apparently had a short life, recording two LPs in the late 60′s and the last release available at Now’s blog. They have also important participations at Brazilian music festivals from the 60′s. Let’s see how O Quarteto performs here at Loronix.

Tracks include:

01 – Os Grilos (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
02 – Live For Life (Vivre Pour Vivre) (F. Lai)
03 – O Velho (Chico Buarque)
04 – Bonita (Tom Jobim)
05 – Rua Antiga (Roberto Menescal / R. Richter)

Do you like vocal groups? I do. It is nice to hear and understand arrangements made for voices and this group excels on this kind of thing.

O Quarteto recorded only three albums, two are available here at Loronix, while the third, released in 1969, is totally unknown to my ears.

This is a reposting with several improvements, including the FLAC files and high quality front and back cover scans. I will keep my original writing with a few and cosmetic adaptations.

Thanks once again for the successful funding raising campaign we made in just three days. Stay tuned for new features.

Hello, good evening! I feel great today. I think it was a snack that made me feel bad yesterday, nothing better than 12 hours of continuous sleeping to get yourself fixed. Since I feel good, let’s have a great start today with a record that I like a lot, taking advantage of the last records picturing Bossa Nova 10, 29, 30 years after.
Let’s see what we have here.

This is O Quarteto – Antologia da Bossa Nova 20 Anos Depois (1977), for Philips. You probably remember
the first O Quarteto LPreleased at Loronix, but if you don’t, O Quarteto is a vocal group that released only two self-titled albums in the late 60′s, in spite of the active participation they had on several Festivais da Cancao. Antologia da Bossa Nova 20 Anos Depois was released with an interval of 9 years between the second LP. I do not have available info of the reasons they do not made albums, since they are a great vocal group that is always backed up by renowned musicians, as you can check bellow at personnel listing.

Cesar Camargo´s seventies arrangements usually inspire me…

Thank you for this amazing post. I had never heard this group before and have been listening to it non-stop since finding it here. The arrangements on this LP are totally nuts.

Dear Zeca, I’m very disappointed.
I was so happy… I was sure to have at least one album you don’t have, an old brazilian LP from a group named “O Quarteto”, a Bossa Nova anthology. I was already searching it in my collection, ready to send it to you as a humble gift, a small thank compared to what you offer to us.
But before, I have googled the web, in order to see what is indicated about this group and this album (and a possible re-edition in CD):
- I typed “Quarteto” & “20 anos depois”
- pressed button “Search”
- … and here I am, return at Loronix!

Is there any brazilian disk that can escape you? I despair to be ever able to pay my debt with brazilian music as money…
I have a few other ideas, but now, big thanks for this original and interesting disk: my record-player is old, head must be changed and I can’t find easily what’s needed: I have hundreds of old LPs and am unable to listen to them. I can now hear again this LP with pleasure (and with the best quality).
Hat off, Mr. Zeca!

Hey Franck,

I’m in the middle of my work, but I could not resist to drop a line to say that Brazilian music has tons of wonderful albums that are not listed at Loronix.
Thanks once again!
Kind Regards,
zeca
